Epidermis is Still a Funny Word
Part of my recent learning escapades has been centered around self care. I feel like I have not been taking care of myself physically and mentally as much as I would like to. One of the ways I wanted to have a little fun while taking time to appreciate my body is checking out skin care. I have a lot of fun with facial masks and I get super giddy when I find an amazing new soap or lotion. This time, I wanted to see what an esthetician had to say. In an interview on Allure's youtube page, Dr. Shereene Idriss and her work seem to focus on anti-aging. Which still feels a little concerning to me considering aging is a natural thing and I feel like we could all talk for hour about botox alone.
However I wasn't there to judge to point out the things I didn't agree with. I was watching to learn. They approached it in such a way that she is describing what she uses, when, and why. She made a huge impression on me when she talked about how there is no miracle, one-time fix or one-size-fits-all approach to healthy skin. She did mention that she is lucky in her field because in many other medical professions the evidence of something that is harming someone is internal and the medical professional often has to explain and show them that they need treatment. It makes sense to me that skin conditions are often very obvious but also many people feel more confident when they feel that their skin looks healthy. I was ecstatic when she suggested some products that were within my price range for what I was willing to spend. And those that were way above I either didn't bother with or I found a cheaper alternative but I learned what to look for to make sure I was getting the most important parts.
Not only does using her recommendations and her logic give me confidence, but I also want to recognize that this video alone probably changed what is shown under the amazon section that lists what other people bought that also bought that facial lotion. Hint: more products from that same video. I did hear a lot and some things that I had learned from other sources and health professionals which influenced the purchases I was most confident in.
Red, blotchy skin is something that I've never really felt confident about although I understand that it's my body just working the way it does and it's not some disease or something. I also know that dry patches on my face and painful pimples and the like are not a fun experience. There's also the matter of being a woman in a working position where I see people face to face every day and I have mixed feelings about my understanding of how important visual impressions are within a professional setting. I also want to keep in mind the ideas behind makeup and skin color which I also have the privilege of having naturally clearer and light skin.
I know that I cannot expect this video to offer everything I would love to see and it leads me to wondering if somewhere she talks about awareness of those who choose only natural anti-aging agents or those who medically should seek a doctor before trying a new skin product. Also there's that whole anti-aging mentality which is interesting and saddening at the same time. I also recognize that at the end of the day as long as it isn't hurting anyone or the planet we live on that I might feel a little more positively towards altering ones body in this way but I also have to wonder about the mentality behind those who decide to alter their face and what intention it comes from.
I agree that helping someone feel more confident can be amazing, but I also wonder why is it better to look younger? I ask that rhetorically as I could write endlessly about it and I can learn so much more.
